INTERNATIONAL MOUNTAIN DAY
We’re thrilled to announce our participation in the 2024 International Mountain Day event on Wednesday, 11/12/2024, hosted by DJAARA (Dja Dja Wurrung) at Lalgambuk (Mt Franklin).
As a proud Aboriginal and Dja Dja Wurrung business local to the Central Victoria Region, we are honoured to celebrate this special day with our community and share our handcrafted bush teas.
This year’s theme, “Mountain Solutions for a Sustainable Future – Innovation, Adaptation, Youth and Beyond,” reflects our values of sustainability, cultural preservation, and healing Country. It highlights the importance of innovative approaches, adaptive strategies, and youth engagement to build resilient and sustainable mountain environments and cultures.
TOGETHER, OUR COLLECTIVE EFFORTS WILL SHAPE THE FUTURE HEALTH OF MOUNTAINS AND THE COMMUNITIES THEY SUPPORT.
International Mountain Day (IMD), established by the United Nations in 2003, highlights the importance of sustainable mountain development and raises awareness about mountains vital roles in supporting ecosystems and human communities.
WHY MOUNTAINS MATTER
SIGNIFICANCE OF LALGAMBUK TO DJA DJA WURRUNG PEOPLE
Lalgambuk (Mt Franklin) holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for the Dja Dja Wurrung People as a place of gathering, ceremony, and connection with Ancestors and spirits. Caring for Djandak (Country) is central to our identity, passed down through generations despite the impacts of colonisation. IMD is an opportunity to reconnect with Country, honour Ancestors’ wisdom, and foster shared custodianship for future generations.
Through DJAARA’s Dhelkunya Dja Country Plan, strategies like Forest Gardening and Climate Change Plans reflect a strong commitment to protecting and healing Country. Learn more about Lalgambuk’s cultural significance on the DJAARA website.
